Our story
Hugo Systems began in 2013 inside a busy Johannesburg specialist practice. Co-founders Chris Kerr-Peterson and Dr Andre Hugo, together with the practice team, set out to build something that would give patients real control over their care and let clinicians spend their time treating patients rather than wrestling with admin.
It started with online booking. Patients loved being able to book for themselves and the front desk's workload dropped almost overnight. From there, the team kept turning everyday operational problems into features, one at a time.
Patients wanted more information, and nothing on the market met that need without high costs, annual lock-ins and holding practice data hostage. So the team built its own platform. Hugo Systems went live in September 2019, shaped side by side with the clinicians, coordinators and front-desk staff who use it every day.
Part of Smileway
In 2023 Hugo Systems became part of Smileway, a South African healthcare group. Today it runs Smileway's growing network of practices across Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
Running a fleet of practices on one platform keeps Hugo Systems honest. Every new practice, specialty and workflow feeds back into the product, and our team ships improvements continuously, often several times a day, without interrupting the practices using it. The platform is monitored around the clock, so issues are picked up and fixed before most teams notice.
